Replace your natural, cloudy lens  with a lens that focuses correctly.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a cataract, surgery is the only treatment option. Cataract removal is a safe, quick and pain-free operation conducted as a day case. It’s estimated that, worldwide, over 12 million procedures are carried out each year – more than any other surgical procedure
At Space Healthcare, we’re here to help. Mark Wevill, our ophthalmic surgeon, is one of the leading providers of cataract surgery. Once done the procedure not only restores your vision to how it was before you had cataracts, it may also reduce your dependence on glasses, and in some cases eradicates the need for them altogether.

What are Cataracts?

The lens of the eye is normally clear, but a cataract causes it to become cloudy and vision deteriorates.  This may be quite gradual and the first signs may be a change in your glasses prescription. Sometimes it  can make bright lights, such as oncoming headlights, appear uncomfortably bright. You may also notice that colours are not as vibrant as they once seemed. Later your vision will be blurred even with glasses, like looking through a misted window.  Initially this may occur in one eye more than the other, but cataracts will usually affect both eyes at some point.

How do you treat Cataracts?

There are 2 main types of cataract correction, multifocal lenses and monofocal vision:

Monofocal Vision

Monfocal lenses can be a great way to correct your vision for one particular distance. You can have both eyes treated to see well for distance, and wear reading glasses. Or it may be possible to correct both distance and near vision meaning that you’re free from glasses most of the time.

Multifocal Vision

For many people who currently wear glasses or contact lenses, a multifocal lens could mean independence from both. Our surgeon Mark can choose from a wide range of lenses to tailor the best vision solution for you.

Am I suitable for Cataract surgery?

More than a third of people over the age of 65 have cataracts that impair their vision.

In England, more than 300,000 cataract operations are carried each year (that’s about 100 cataract operations every hour)

Cataracts can have a number of causes, including ageing, smoking, sunshine and diabetes. Some risks can be inherited in our genes. Not every reason is fully understood and even young people occasionally get cataracts.

Treatment for cataracts involves replacing the affected lens. However, there are many different types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) and your choice of lens needs to be considered carefully, because changing the lens after cataract eye surgery is difficult. Our surgeon, Mark Wevill has more than 30 years experience using many types of lens and can guide you in choosing the best solution for your individual needs.
